How Veins Become Varicose

The illustration shows how a varicose vein for...Image via Wikipedia
We have all seen them on friends or we may have them, and they make us feel very uncomfortable because of the way they look "VARICOSE".

Lets take a look at how veins become varicose and what we can do to prevent or get treatment.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart, while veins carry the used blood back for oxygenation. The trip from your feet to your heart and lungs-against the force of gravity is not an easy one. Veins achieve this task mainly with one-way valves that let the blood move up, but not down. These valves must hold tight , or the blood will flood lower compartments.

Should leg muscles fail or back-flow occur, the veins become stretched and bloated, the vein  has become stretched and swollen with blood. It's a lot of work to move all that blood through your entire body. To do their job, veins are full of valves that help keep the blood flowing in the right direction. Valves are like tiny doors that close after the blood has passed through to keep blood moving along and to make sure it doesn't flow backward.

As we get older,  the valves might not work as well. When that happens, some blood can stay in a vein instead of moving forward like it should. This makes the vein swell up, and that swollen vein is a varicose vein. Varicose veins are more common in women, I know, I know what a bum deal , if you stand for long period of time without exercisepregnant women get them and even being over weight.

It's really no big deal, they're usually pretty harmless. But people who have problems like pain with their varicose veins will sometimes have to see a doctor to have them removed.
What can we do to remove them to get rid of varicose veins, some of the things doctors can do is zap them with light from a special laser or use something called sclerotherapy (say: skler-oh-thair-uh-pee). In sclerotherapy, the doctor injects fluid into the vein that makes it shrivel up. Both of these treatments are pretty common.

What can you do now that you have them , you can give your legs enough exercise, you can jog, run or cycle and or swim , walk which ever one of these you are able to do. This is to give your legs a good workout, even going barefoot at home is also a help, because it strengthens the foot muscles and blood flow. Going on a high fiber diet can help this means a plenty of whole grains, wheat germ, bran, fresh fruits and salads- this wont make the varicose veins go away bit it can keep the condition from occurring and from becoming worse.

How To Prevent Varicose Veins? Five Tips

  1. People who live a sedentary lifestyle and are less active are more prone to develop varicose veins for example people who sit on the computers working all day for around 6 to 8 hours, so for them, it is highly recommended to get a break and move around or walk around after every hour of work.
  2. People should make sure to limit the time to rest with their feet elevated.
  3. The best seats for people who are prone to developing varicose veins or have varicose veins are reclining chairs that will keep their feet higher than their hips.
  4. Benefits of exercise are well know by each and every person and exercise also helps in preventing varicose veins because exercise prevent blood clots, which cause the formation of varicose veins.
  5. Using compression stockings could help prevent or alleviate the severe effects caused by varicose veins.
  6. Nutrition: For preventing varicose veins, one can increase the intake of healthy food sources of bioflavonoids, such as dark berries, green leafy vegetables, onions and garlic, and whole grains for vitamins and healthy nutrients.
