Lips Scrubs

Salt & Sugar Lip Scrub
Mix salt, white sugar and vaseline. Apply the mixture on your lips and gently rub the mixture to remove dead skin cells.
Wash your lips with water and your lips will be soft and smooth.
Use 2 or 3 time a week if your lips tend to be very dry and flaky.

Sugar Lip Scrub
Mix a small amount of coarse sugar with a few drops of water.
Apply the mixture onto lips and gently rub it in. Wash with lukewarm water and apply olive oil or vaseline to moisturize them.

Honey Lip Scrub
You will need the following:
1 teaspoon of honey
1 teaspoon of baking soda
a few drops of olive oil
Start with a base. I like something waxy, such as good old ChapStick which is economical
Scrape off a little ChapStick with a knife or small spatula and make a paste-like consistency by adding sugar.
Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, apply, and get smooching.

Mix the honey and baking soda until a smooth paste is formed.
Apply the mixture on your lips and leave it on for a few minutes then gently rub the lips to remove dead skin.

Wash your lips with water and apply olive oil on your lips to moisturize them.

What you need:
1 tea spoon of honey
1 tea spoon of sugar (brown or white sugar)
and a tiny bit of vaseline

Stir it all up and fill it in a little container. Don't keep it in the fridge because the honey is going to harden. I would recommend not keeping it longer than a week.

Another Sugar lip scrub:
It's easy just dip your finger in it and apply it all over your lips and gently srub it. Try not to harsh if you have sensitive lips. The sugar scrubs away the dead skin cells and the honey and vaseline add moisture to your lips. Then you can either lick it off your lips or wipe it off with a tissue. After all that just apply your favorite lip balm.

Getting soft kissable lips

Winter plays havoc on your lips the cold weather brings chapped, cracked and sad lips that can even be a bit painful if not treated in time.


Drink lots of water, water helps the skin get rid of all the toxic materials. Water also hydrates the body and the effect shows on the skin. This prevents the drying and chapping of the lips.

And something we do without even noticing is licking our lips, avoid licking your lips at all cost. Though licking your lips is a quick fix to moisten your lips, in the long term it actually causes more harm than good by rubbing away the remaining moisture.


Brush your lips: You can do this by using a soft toothbrush (not the one you brush your teeth with) to gently brush your lips in small circular motions.  By doing this you are exfoliating your lips and removing the dead skin cells.
Apply a sugar scrub: Mix a little sugar with a few drops of water in your palm or a small bowl until it forms a paste.  Gently apply this to your lips in small circular motions using your fingertips.  After a minute or so rinse it off.

Use butter or honey:  Take a small amount of butter or honey (only pure honey) and apply it gently with your finger in tiny rotations.  Leave it on for one or two minutes and wipe it clean with a soft towel or tissue.  You could repeat this if required.  Butter will give your lips a natural sheen while honey will add to the plumpness of your lips.

I was not aware of this until my makeup artist shared with me that before applying my lipstick it is good to get in the habit to apply lip balm before applying lipstick: Never apply lipstick directly on the lips.lipsticks contain chemicals that causes harm to the lips leaving them dry and discolored. Plus this helps get the lips ready for your lip liner to help make the color stay longer.

At night, smooth on Vaseline or petroleum jelly for extra hydration and moisture. Vaseline is available worldwide and is very budget-friendly. Rub a layer into your lips in circular motions.

Finally even if you have a BFF (Best Friend Forever) never ever share your lip balms with anyone and throw out any lip balms that you have had for more than a year, as they can store bacteria.

Getting soft elbows

If you have ever felt your elbows and screamed because they felt like steel wool pads, then yes you have rough and dry elbows here are some tips to help with the rough spot, wash your elbows with an exfoliating product daily to remove the dead skin cells.

Moisturize your elbows two to three times a day. Use moisturizing products that contain aloe vera, vitamin E and alpha hydroxy, you can apply olive oil or coconut oil for extra moisture. Warm up a small amount of oil and apply it directly to your elbows and rub it on.

Exfoliate to get rid of the dead skin cells
Take a sturdy body brush and apply soap to it. Next, wet your elbows, take the body brush, and brush each elbow in gentle but firm circular movements for about ten minutes or you can simply rub the rough and flaking skin with an exfoliating sponge,either a natural fibre loofah or a massage glove. Rinse well and dry with a soft towel.

Hand creams are usually more oily than body lotions and are  an excellent option for softening elbows. You can apply the cream once a day, but twice, three or even four times would  even better. 


You’ll need a daily treatment for your rough elbows

If the problem persists, visit a dermatologist. Since there is a possibility that ashy elbows can be caused by a skin condition like psoriasis or eczema.

Your Skin Part Two (2) Dry Skin

Definition By Mayo Clinic staff state that:


Ordinarily, dry skin isn't serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unsightly, turning plump cells into shriveled ones and creating fine lines and wrinkles. Serious dry skin conditions — an inherited group of disorders called ichthyosis — can sometimes be disfiguring, causing psychological distress.

These include exposure to hot or cold weather with low humidity levels and excessive bathing. Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's evaluation. 


But first you can do a lot on your own to improve your skin, including using moisturizers, bathing less and avoiding harsh, drying soaps. I know bathing less you would think bath more and moisturizers more.  Skip the drying soaps you know which ones they are you leave them out and all of a sudden you start to see cracks on them, imagine if they have cracks what will they do to your skin "Yikes". 


Stick with a creamy moisturizing cleanser that contains glycerin or petrolatum, and don't forget your hands and feet they also need to be pampered.  Put on moisturizer and gloves BEFORE you head outdoors in the winter, and consider lathering up your feet in thick moisturizer and sleeping in cotton socks at night.

Also remember your lips also need to be moisturized and licking them doesn't help it makes it worse by drying them out even more, lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. Try moisturizing your lips with Vaseline, take a toothbrush and brush your lips in a circular motion. This will remove dead flakes and leave your lips soft and supple and kissable muah.


New studies show omega-3 fish oil pills may soothe super dry skin. in a study reported in Allure magazine, saw significant results within a few weeks.


Dry skin is often just a temporary problem that can occur more during the winter time here is a list of some signs.
  • A feeling of skin tightness, after showering, bathing or swimming
  • Itching (pruritus) that sometimes may be intense
  • Skin that appears shrunken or dehydrated
  • Skin that feels and looks rough rather than smooth
  • Redness, fine lines or cracks
Most cases of dry skin respond well to  home remedies and over the counter lotions and or creams. But at times you may need to see your doctor if your skin doesn't improve in spite of your best efforts and you start to noticed redness itching, open sores or infections from so much and  scaling or peeling skin. This could be a sign of a more serve problem and needs to be address by your doctor.

Your Skin Part One (1)

1. Top layer - Epidermis


It is made up of 5 layers: Stratum Corneum - horny layer, Stratum lucidum - clear layer, Stratum granulosum - granular layer, Stratum spinosum - spiny layer - prickle cell, melanin production, and Stratum Germinativum - basal Layer- where the cells divide and grow upwards.Each of these layers has their own layers. The Stratum spinosum gives skin its color. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, composed of terminally differentiated stratified squamous epithelium, acting as the body's major barrier against an inhospitable environment. It is the thinnest on the eyelids at .05 mm and the thickest on the palms and soles at 1.5 mm. 



2. Middle layer - Dermis 


It is made up of: Blood vessels (supply nutrients to the skin), Lymph vessels (defence mechanism for the immune system), Hair follicles (protection and sebum production), Sweat glands (regulators of heat), and Pain and touch receptors (carry impulses to the brain). The dermis, or corium, is the thick, relatively soft inner most tissue of the skin. It shields and repairs injured tissues and is about four times thicker than the epidermis. Thedermis consists mainly of protein collagen, which builds scar tissue to mend cuts and abrasions. The dermis nourishes the epidermis and contains nerve endings and blood vessels, and may contain some fatty tissue. The bases of hairs are also located in the dermis. Underneath the dermis is the hypodermis, which is a fatty subcutaneous layer.


A. The dermal papillae are small, nipple-like protrusions of the dermis that reach into the epidermis, bringing food and oxygen to the lower layers of epidermal cells. In addition, a papilla nourishes every hair follicle. Rows of papillae protruding from the dermis into the epidermis form ridges that create patterns on the skin of the hands, feet, and body. These papillary ridges on the fingertips are responsible for fingerprints. These ridges develop sometime before birth. Not only is the pattern unique for each individual, but also it never changes except to grow larger.


3..Bottom layer - Subcutaneous or hypodermis

 These are fat cells that conserve body heat while protecting other organs from injury. They provide a cushioning effect and are a source of energy in lean times. The hypodermis is a fatty subcutaneous tissue below the dermis. This tissue is rich in fat and blood vessels. The fat cells serve as a cache of energy and are consumed when nutrients run short in the blood stream. Subcutaneous tissue also cushions the muscles, bones, and organs against shocks and shields the body from cold.


The Functions of Skin 
This skin provides a protective layer for organs and tissues from pathogens, heat and light. It regulates body temperature. It stores water, fat and Vitamin D and has touch receptors that sense pain or pleasure. Skin is an excretory and absorption organ. Skin has a natural moisturising factor (NMF). Teen skin is prone to oiliness as hormones are regulating. At 20-30 years skin cell turnover provides optimum condition. At 30-40 years cell turnover starts to decrease and fine lines start to appear. At 40-50 years skin becomes more dry. Over 50 years of age, cell turnover drops by 50% resulting in flaky patches and deeper lines.
